Macaroni and cheese is a common comfort
food in America. However, the shocking reality is that the food isn’t even an
American food. It is a meal that originated in England as something of a
casserole dish. After it was created, this food was featured in cookbooks from
the medieval era, and found in older English cookbooks. Although, the food that is covered by this
recipe is a mere modification of the meal based on a person’s taste. After
tracing the roots of the meal, it was revealed that Thomas Jefferson, “came
across the food in Italy and Paris” leading to its expansion to North America.
(Wikipedia)
It took only one country to create the
common dish but it is a staple in many countries now as a side dish or main
dish. In the modern world, it is an extremely popular dish for two reasons
primarily. Firstly, the dish is extremely easy to make and a fast meal. Due to
these reasons, people are really likely to use this meal to efficiently and
effectively fill their children’s stomachs or just grab a small bite.
Something really interesting about this
dish is that it can be modified to match any taste as seen in the recipe being
discussed in this post. Fish, rather seafood in general is something that is
commonly placed with pasta. However, the pasta is normally some form of an Alfredo
or buttery dish and not something based on cheese. Yet, with this dish, it is
something that is just completely out of the norm and this is why this recipe
stands out. It just makes me acknowledge this dish so much more especially
since it is something so simple, yet it can be crafted to become something so
complex and creative.

ReplyDeleteDear Ty,
ReplyDeleteI love this section on soul food, because obviously I am not African American however my girlfriend who I have been dating for three years is and boy have I been introduced to "soul food". I love the sensory imagery you use to describe it, everything is right on to what I have experienced. I believe the effort and time put into the food is what makes it so special. The members of the family cooking the meal pour so much love into the food and it establishes an atmosphere that you cant help but let your soul get lifted.
Sincerely,
Chris Shahin
Hey Ty,
ReplyDeleteI think you completely hit the nail on the head when you say that it is both a comfort food and a meal of practicality; it is true that simplicity is brilliance. I think the best part of this food is simply the fact that it is such a perfect base for any variation you can think of and still be quite simple to make. One of my personal favorite variations is Buffalo Mac & Cheese; there is something so perfect about the mixing of the spicy Buffalo chicken with the cheese that makes it an absolute favorite of mine. I definitely liked your history aspect too; I always knew that Jefferson introduced tomatoes to America, but never something like Mac & Cheese; it seems he did as much for America's culinary heritage as he did its political heritage.
